For Ray Verseau, climbing is only a byproduct of his true love, belaying. Verseau has taken his love of the belay and turned that passion into a profession, he is the World's Best Belayer.

Ray told us: "I never set out to be the World's Best Belayer, this was just a passion of mine. Coming home from work years ago I had this moment, where I just knew that I had to devote my life to the art of the belay. No other activity is as pure, or as fulfilling to me. I wake up each morning, begin my training routine, stretch, warm up, and then go to the gym or crag. In that moment when it is just you, your climber, the rope, and the device everything else vanishes. It's like a zen state. I am so lucky that I've found a way to dedicate my life to this purity and art."

Ce film retrace la première partie de l’aventure Maewan, entre l’Islande et le Groenland, où Erwan Le Lann a rassemblé une équipe d’experts complémentaires (marin, free rider, alpiniste, photographe, cameraman) sur deux bateaux au départ d’Isafjordur...
 
 


"Le projet Maewan est parti d’une envie d’aller découvrir les océans et terres reculées de notre planète. J’ai donc acheté un voilier "Maewan IV" capable d’affronter ces environnements difficiles. Il est devenu une plate-forme d’aventure ouverte à toutes mes connaissances passionnées de leurs activités, experts dans leurs métiers. Pendant quatre années nous parcourrons les mers à la recherche de premières sur des sites de pratiques inédits, dans le grand Nord, la côte Asiatique, les iles du Pacific, le grand Sud.

Nous sommes partis le 8 février 2015 de Bretagne en direction de l’Islande pour grimper des cascades glace, puis fin Mars malgré l’hiver encore très présent, nous décidons de nous diriger vers le sud du Groenland, terrain montagneux exceptionnel, et tenter de rentrer dans ces fjords gelés pour skier des couloirs et pentes de neige vierges.

Nous naviguerons sur les côtes ouest du Groenland jusqu’à la fin du mois d’Août, l’équipage changeant en fonction des projets d’expéditions, ski, alpinisme, escalade rocheuse, exploration… Cette année, en 2016, nous repartons au mois de juin pour la grande traversée du passage du Nord Ouest et atterrir à l’Est de la Russie sur la péninsule du Kamchatka. Pendant tout l’été, d’autres activités, recherche, prélèvements, photos seront au rendez-vous."
